Why recycle
- Reduce the amount of rubbish we bury in landfill sites. Rotting rubbish in a landfill site produces methane gas, a strong greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming and is 21 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. If we carry on as we are much of Essex will be under water.
- Save natural resources such as metal, oil and sand.
- Save energy. Recycling 1 can saves enough energy to run a TV set for 3 hours. Recycling 1 glass bottle save enough energy to power a 100 watt bulb for an hour.
- Help Essex reach its recycling and composting targets. All Essex councils have challenging targets to meet. If we don't meet these councils will be fined.
- It's only fair that we all take more notice and responsibility for the rubbish we produce.
It is estimated that as much as 60% of what we throw away can be used again.
