Food digesters
The Green Cone
The Green Cone is a food waste digester. This means that it can dispose of all kitchen food waste including cooked and uncooked food, meat, fish, bones, dairy products, bread, pasta, fruit scraps and vegetable peelings. The Green Cone's design breaks food down into carbon dioxide and nutrient rich water which drains away into the soil.
When installed correctly, with the Green Cone sunk into a sunny part of the garden in free draining soil, minimal residue is produced (please note that the Green Cone cannot compost garden waste). The Green Cone is supplied in four parts including a lower basket which must be buried in a hole in the ground approximately 80cm wide and 60cm deep. This basket then forms the base for an upper assembly consisting of a black inner cone and a green outer lidded plastic cone. Accelerator powder and an application jar are also provided. Bokashi Systems
Q. What is a Bokashi system?
The Bokashi System is a kitchen digester that breaks down your food waste using micro organisams and fermentation. The resulting material is full of nutrients and can be dug into your garden or used to accelerate the composting process in your compost bin.
Q. How does it work?
The bins are sold in pairs – Start filling the first bin with food and sprinkle a layer of bokashi bran over every couple of inches of food. Once a bin is full, leave it for 2 weeks to ferment and start filling the 2nd bin. After 2 weeks, the full bin will be fermented. The Bokashi Compost will not look like traditional compost, it will look more like it has been pickled and will have a sweet and sour smell. The 2 bins are then alternated with one bin taking the fresh waste while the other is fermenting.
Q. Where do I keep it?
Ideally in the kitchen, it doesn’t smell and the process is anaerobic which means the process happens with no air therefore it is a sealed unit and will not attract flies etc. Depending on the time of year you could keep it outside by the back door. In winter it may take longer to ferment in when cold.
Q. What do I do with the fermented food?
After 2 weeks the food waste will be fully fermented and you can add this straight to your compost bin. Alternatively you can dig a hole and dig it straight into your garden. It won’t attract vermin as the material will not smell.
Q. Will it smell?
It will smell sweet and sour but because of the process it won’t smell bad like rotting rubbish.
Q. What happens to the liquid?
This gathers in a reservoir in the bottom of the unit. There is a tap at the bottom making draining easy. Drain this off every couple of days. This liquid has a number of uses. Dilute with water 1:100 and use as plant feed, or poor down drains and sinks to eliminate odours and stop algae build up.
